Shaping is such a delight

This has been one of the most fun things I have ever done. The stoke from each stage of progression kept me happy for the many weeks between available shaping time. School has made this a really slow process but during our last break I went home and Finished shaping the board all together. Pics To follow...

Volcoms Contest

Volcom announced a contest for the first person to land a kickflip on a surfboard and document it on tape.

OFFICIAL RULES AND REGULATIONS FOR VOLCOM STONE'S $10,000 KICKFLIP-OFF CONTEST! READ CAREFULLY!

To date, no one has ever documented a cleanly landed kickflip on a surfboard. Volcom is giving away $10,000 to the first person that can land a �proper� kickflip while surfing! By proper we mean an �above the lip� kickflip where first you launch an air, use your front foot to flip the board, and then land on it and ride out cleanly. No backwash, no fingerflips, no grabs, no laybacks. Just a proper kickflip. We�re going to be strict on these following guidelines. The rules are all listed here, so get out there and put this trick in the history books. Good luck!

Rules:
1. Your entry must be on video from the start of the trick through the ride out. No photos allowed.
2. This contest is open to everyone. The contest begins today November 21st, 2007, and will run until there's a winner.
3. The kickflip must be a real air �above the lip� � No backwash, No chop hops, or anything in the flats or below the lip of the wave.
4. All waves must be self caught � You must paddle into the wave. This means NO tow-ats, step-offs, jetskis, boats, dinghys, winches, canoes, oars, helicopters, dolphins or assistance of any kind.
5. No grabs of any kind. Not before, not after, not during.
6. You must completely �ride out� of the kickflip. That means if you land on the back of the wave and fail to continue surfing the wave � it�s not a make!
7. No heelflips. Or else we�d have called it the Heelflip-Off.
8. No shoes. Who surfs in shoes anyway? Regular �made for surfing� booties are acceptable.
9. You must be riding a surfboard with at least one fin. No boogie boards, wakeboards, wakeskates, skimboards, kiteboards, trays etc.

Night session

Just got back from a pretty wicked sunset/night session.

I started on 7th st and drifted up to 14th where there is a massive floodlight pointed on the beach off of the pier. The added illumination really helped creep me out. It is weird to look down and see crabs swimming by, let alone all the other, bigger fish of the ocean. 

There weren't too many good waves, I somehow managed to hit low tide yet again. It doesn't matter though, just being in the water was enough.

Back at School

Finally made it back down to S.C.  There was supposed to be a 4-5 ft swell today in Myrtle. However due to bad timing, a late night, and a late breakfast I didn't get anything great. I got to 62nd north around 1:00 pm. Low tide was at ~2:30. The waves were pretty good when I first showed up, managed to find some fast right breaks from the get-go. There were 3 other people in the water, they seemed good from the distance I was at. One of the guys managed to pop some decent air as I approached the waters edge. 

 

The photo doesn't do it much justice (taken at dead low), but the waves were manageable, clean and fun. There were a few big rogues but they were all close-outs and not worth the while. I stuck around till 4 or so, my body was crippled by dehydration at this point. 

Nothing like some Sweet Tea from Wendys after a good paddle.

This week looks like it will be a good one for this area. Once everyone gets back down here we will get the whole surf posse back out together.

surfing makes a girl 10x hotter

A new years resolution, coming a bit late.

It is that time of year again, when for whatever reason, you lie to yourself and presume your slate has been wiped clean. You can start all over again and correct the errors of the years gone by. It is all done by declaring a New Years Resolution, A non-binding contract with yourself to improve upon your many flaws. 

From my short span in this world, I have learned that these are never meant to last more than 2 months, if that at all. People love to be resolute on things they cannot change. I like to think of it as the beauty pageant cliche where a contestant is asked, "if you become Ms. ________ what will be your goals and ambitions" (or any variation on said question) and the typical response from all of the contestants would be "bring world peace/end world hunger/world education/etc." In actuality, these "winners" will never do anything more than bring a few lonely, lonely men to climax with their photo-shoot and inspire a whole new generation of little bimbos to excel at memorizing a few questions and morbidly bland and cliched answers, Eating disorders, narcissism and the importance of fellatio and its direct link to becoming the winner. To those of you in the beauty pageant world, I apologize but I hate everything you stand for.

Fuck. I cant remember why I started writing this or where I was going with it.

Oh yeah, resolutions... I guess the point was to make reasonable resolutions, something you can actually do. You do not need to lie to yourself every year and think your gonna get in the peek shape of your life.

For example, My new years resolution is to finish shaping my surfboard by April. This gives me a nice stretch of time to fulfill it in, When I am at school I will need this time because I can only do work on it from home in MD. I also resolve to mark down every day I go surfing on a calendar to keep as a personal record.
